New Gigs, New Videos and Very Creative Lunchbreaks - October's Ruarri Update.

This week Ruarri kicked off a short jaunt supporting Scotland's finest folk troubadour King Creosote as he tours the British Isles.

We reached Ruarri by phone just as he finished an instore appearance in Oxford ahead of the first show of the tour:

"It was good, I dropped my children off at school and then drove to Oxford, which is a strange day in itself. I arrived at the shop and they said I should play outside in front of this shopping centre. It was really fun though - people were walking past and joining in."

Ruarri couldn't wait to start the tour and finally witness a King Creosote live show:

"He's got a pretty enviable career really. He's under the radar but popular and he's got a lot of credibility so I think he's a good person to aspire to. I've never seen him before so I'm looking forward to meeting him and watching the show."

After the tour Ruarri will begin filming the video for his upcoming single 'Won't Work' and explained that it will showcase a slightly different side of Ruarri Joseph:

"I think I made enough of a fool of myself in the last two videos so I'm playing it straight in this one. We did come up with a few ideas which would have made funny videos but I don't wanna be known just as a clown. So if we can make it slightly more serious this time that'd be great. The sentiment of the song is quite important so we've gone for an idea that's more closely associated with that feeling."

We'll have the video for you as soon as we can - stay tuned.

Ruarri also explained that 'Won't Work' had a rather interesting journey from its initial gestation to finally appearing on his current album, 'Tales of Grime and Grit':

"It's an old song. I remember writing it when I was about 17, but when it came to recording it, I was working at a nursery looking after kids and I literally lived round the corner. So I nipped home and recorded the demo in my lunch break. And the demo version is actually the song that's on the album.

"We re-recorded it again note-for-note with a producer, with the best equipment possible and with a big studio and stuff - but it just wasn't as good. There's something about that demo and something about that lunch break that just seemed to work. Fortune favoured me well that day."

Stay tuned for more news on this single in the coming weeks.

Next up from Ruarri will be a short film documenting his recent Bristol bonanza that saw him squeezing six gigs into one night. The challenge got off to a shaky start but ultimately it was an enjoyable experience that he's keen to repeat:

"It was good fun. At the first gig there wasn't a single person there but then again it was half past five on a Tuesday night in Bristol. By the end though, it turned out to be a really good night. I wouldn't be against doing that again in another city, in some ways it's better than doing just one gig."

Look out for footage of this crazy evening on this website in the very near future.
